FHWA Air & Noise Modeling

Modeling the Impacts of Noise and
Air Quality for Transportation Planning

Traffic NoiseTraffic Noise

R2T has preformed air and noise modeling for various projects within the state of Georgia as part of the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA). Air and Noise modeling was conducted at various locations within the state of Georgia as part of the environmental assessment for DOTprojects. The air and noise modeling assist planners in determining the affects of road and intersection realignments as well as road and intersection improvements.

The modeling software used for these projects include Mobile6 and CAL3CHQ for air modeling and TNM for noise modeling. This work included the following tasks understanding and interpreting traffic data as it applies to noise and air quality studies. It required field measurements for noise using a Type II calibrated sound level meter. Tasks also included an organized write-up of air quality and noise reports prepared in a readerfriendly format consistent with standard NEPA writing style.

Below the fold:

Specific project experience includes:

SR 93 at Joyner Road, Grady County Georgia: Turn lanes to increase safety on SR 93 near the Joyner Road intersection.
SR400 /I –85 Interchange, Atlanta, Georgia: Connection ramps for Georgia State Route 400 and Interstate 85.
Columbus, Georgia: Veterans Parkway, Columbus, Georgia: Road widening and intersection improvements of Veterans Parkway between Cooper Creek Road and Old Moon Road.
Memorial Drive, Atlanta, Georgia: Road widening and intersection improvements of Memorial Drive in Atlanta.
State Route 53/State Route 124, Braselton, Georgia: Intersection realignment for SR 53 and SR 124.
State Route 282, Chatsworth, Georgia: Road realignment for SR 282 between US 441 and Old Georgia 61.
West Lawrenceville Street, Duluth, Georgia: Road realignment for West Lawrenceville Street and McClure Bridge Road.

The major categories of tasks proposed for this project are:

Data Collection: Collect and analysis all of the data inputs into the modeling software.
Model Preparation: Prepare the model data to determine air and noise levels of future alignments.
Data Analysis: Review data produced using the modeling software.
Reporting: Report results of model in the approved format
